Southwestern Motor Transport settles collision suit

Rather than go to trial, Southwestern Motor Transport chose to settle a suit claiming one of its truck driver's rear-ended plaintiff David Watson Jr.

Watson filed suit against SMT and Guilibaldo Castillo on Jan. 6, 2010, in Jefferson County District Court.

The case was set to go to trial on Nov. 14.

However, a court official told the Southeast Texas Record that all parties in the suit reached a settlement.

According to his original petition, on Dec. 5, 2009, Watson was traveling on Interstate 10 when he observed an automobile collision ahead of him, prompting him to veer to the shoulder and come to a complete stop.

When he looked into his rearview mirror, he saw Castillo, who was driving a tractor-trailer owned by SMT, barreling toward him.

The collision that ensued allegedly injured Watson and caused him to suffer mental aguish, medical expenses and lost wages.

Beaumont Clay Dugas represents him.

SMT and Castillo are represented by attorney Scott Alexander.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 6oth District Court, is assigned to the case.
