Jury determines market value of Glen Morgan's airplane hangar

The value of a hangar at Jack Brooks Regional Airport is worth the same today as it was in January 2006, a Jefferson County jury found.

In 2006, Beaumont attorney Glen Morgan sued the Jefferson County Appraisal District, claiming the hangar he leased was exempt from ad valorem taxes and that the county had appraised the property above its cash market value.

The case went to trial on Aug. 21 in Judge Donald Floyd's 172nd District Court, court records show.

According to the charge of the jury, filed Aug. 23, jurors determined that the market value of the hangar is worth the same today as it was in January 2006, $10,752.

In his suit, Morgan, a managing partner at Reaud, Morgan & Quinn, says that the property had "been appraised at a value greater than its fair cash value and in a manner and amount that is not equal and uniform in comparison to other properties, and, therefore, the property's appraised value is excessive and unlawful."

"The property made the subject of this litigation was at all times owned by Jefferson County and as such not subject to taxation," Morgan's suit states. "Plaintiff does not own the property but merely has the right to use the property pursuant to an operating lease."
