With 27 precincts reporting, Judge Milton Shuffield, who has presided over the 136thDistrict Court for the last 16 years, was confident Tuesday night he would continue to bring fairness and a civil specialization to the bench.

At 10:38 p.m. Judge Shufflied had already collected 51,914 votes or 60.16 percent, while has Republican challenger, Nederland attorney Rick Williams managed to capture only 34,385 votes, or 39.84 percent.

“I feel very good right now,” said Shuffield. “Thanks to a number of people, we were able to get the message out. It’s about the person, not the politics.”

He added that bipartisan support enabled his Election Day victory.

Judge Sheffield will continue to ensure the 136th District Court focuses on civil litigation.

During the campaign, Williams had openly criticized Judge Shuffield’s handling of the court docket, saying that if he took the bench, he would expand the docket to include family law cases.

Texas district courts can hear civil, criminal and family law cases.

During a September interview, Judge Shuffield told the Southeast Texas Record that by specializing in civil litigation, he has made the court more efficient and improved the quality of service for all litigants.

Judge Shuffield has been married to his wife Sarah since 1978. They have three children.
