Texas stays 'red' in presidential, state races

Cruz talking1

As of 10:30 p.m. with 62 percent of precincts reporting, Republican Mitt Romney has received 58.56 percent of Texas votes.

The Texas Secretary of State results show the Republican candidate received 3,981,844 votes to President Barack Obama’s 2,727,912 votes or 40.12 percent.

However, the 38 Texas electoral votes were not enough to put Romney ahead nationwide, as Obama has now earned 281 electoral votes, more than enough for the 270 needed to win.

Jefferson County voters however, supported Obama with 50.39 percent of the votes. Early voting had the two candidates within 300 votes of each other.

Despite Jefferson County’s support of Democrat Paul Sadler for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, Texans overall chose to send Republican Ted Cruz to Washington.

With 66 percent of state precincts counted, Cruz leads Sadler 57.80 percent to 39.52 percent.

In the closely watched Congressional District 14 for the U.S. House of Representatives, Beaumont native Nick Lampson carried Jefferson County with 58.37 percent, however District 14 voters in Galveston and parts of Brazoria counties are supporting Republican Randy Weber.

District-wide, with 52 percent of precincts counted, Lampson received 97,692 votes or 44.62 percent of votes cast. Weber received 117,573 votes or 52.70 percent of votes cast.
