Houston woman seeks $1M from United after being struck by beverage cart

HOUSTON - A Houston woman alleges she was injured on a United Airlines flight two years ago and is seeking $1 million from the air carrier.

Angela Agbongiague filed suit Jan. 10 against the airline, formerly known as Continental Airlines Inc., in Harris County District Court.

United removed the case to the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas on Jan. 24.

Agbongiague says she was returning home from Los Angeles aboard United Flight 1694Y on Jan. 16, 2011, when the incident in question occurred.

According to the plaintiff, a flight attendant "violently and unexpectedly" pushed a beverage cart into her leg and injured her knee.

"The defendant failed to conduct such activity in a safe and reasonable manner, a manner which created or perpetuated a danger to Angela Agbongiague," the original petition says.

It blames the airline for:

  • Failing to discover the plaintiff's leg and stop the beverage cart within a reasonable time;

  • Failing to follow necessary and proper procedures in ensuring that the aisle was completely clear prior to the subject event;

  • Failing to train flight attendants and other employees in proper safety, security and protection procedures in operating the beverage carts; and

  • Failing to warn the complainant of the unsafe condition.

Consequently, Agbongiague seeks approximately $1 million in damages and a jury trial.

She is represented by attorney Roy W. Smith of Houston.
