Seeking more than $100,000 in damages, area resident Michael Brown has filed suit against Chevron Phillips Chemical and Chevron Pipe Line, alleging an explosion at the defendants’ facility caused fire damage to his property.
The suit was filed Sept. 16 in Jefferson County District Court.
According to the lawsuit, on July 21, 2012, the defendants caused and permitted a dangerous condition to exist that resulted in an explosion, causing fire damage to Brown’s property.
The Beaumont Enterprise reported that the fire started about 5 p.m. when lightning hit an above ground ethylene control valve near West Port Arthur Road and 60th Street during a severe thunderstorm. A large portion of the Port Acres neighborhood was under mandatory evacuation.
There were no injuries reported and the fire began dying down about 8:30 p.m. after valves were shut off to a five mile stretch of pipeline.
At least one building across West Port Arthur Road, Triangle Liquor Store, caught fire when an explosion sent flames billowing across the road, the Enterprise reported.
The plaintiff is suing for actual and consequential damages.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, is assigned to the case.
