Squabble over oil & gas industry newsletter leads to lawsuit

A company that provides articles, information and research for the oil and gas industry claims one of its subscribers is sharing its newsletters without permission.

Energy Intelligence Group Inc. (EIG), filed suit in the United States Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division, on March 11, against Jefferies LLC.

EIG provides information and newsletters dedicated to covering the oil and gas industry and has an office in Houston.

Jefferies LLC is an American global investment bank and institutional securities firm headquartered in New York. The firm provides clients with capital markets and financial advisory services, institutional brokerage, securities research and asset management.

EIG is suing Jefferies for misappropriating it's work.

EIG publishes a newsletter about the global energy industry and sells its work by subscription, according to the filing. EIG says its audience includes stock brokers, investment bankers and other people in the financial industry.

Jefferies allegedly has held a subscription to EIG since 1998. EIG says Jefferies has been taking the EIG publications it receives by subscription and has been emailing and sending it out to individuals without a subscription.

EIG says it's newsletter comes with a detailed disclaimer prohibiting recipients from disseminating it without permission.

EIG claims they have lost money since people are able to receive its newsletter without a subscription. They have filed suit against Jefferies, accusing it of copyright infringement.

EIG is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages.

It is being represented by attorney Robert L. Powley of Powley & Gibson PC  in New York, N.Y.
