HOUSTON (Legal Newsline) – It seems plaintiffs attorney Steve Mostyn, one of Texas’ biggest political donors, isn’t just a connoisseur of lawsuits but of kosher chili too.

According to a March 21 press release, the Mostyn Law Firm sponsored the Fourth Annual Kosher Chili Cookoff at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The event was started in 2011 and has grown to become the largest kosher food event in the city of Houston, the release states. This is the first year of sponsorship for Mostyn Law Firm. More than 2,000 people attended this year’s event, the press release states.

“Houston has a diverse community that has come together to make traditions their own,” Mostyn said. “The quick growth of the kosher cookoff just shows how excited people in Houston are to participate in the rodeo. It’s also a great opportunities to raise money for worthwhile causes.”

Portions of the proceeds from the Kosher Cookoff went to support well-known local Jewish charities, such as Aishel House, ERJCC Meals on Wheels, and Jewish Family Service Free Loan Association. Money was also donated to the Joshua and Robin Berry Scholarship Fund, the press release states.

Mostyn has made more than $150 million in attorneys fees from representing thousands of Hurricane Ike victims in their lawsuits against the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association – the sole provider of windstorm insurance for Texas Gulf Coast residents.

In the years since the hurricane made landfall, campaign finance records show the attorney uses his wealth to donate millions to in-state and out-of-state political candidates.
