Longview Medical Center sued after patient's wife injured in smoking area

Caution trip

An Upshur County woman is suing over claims she was injured on the premises of a medical facility.


Shirley Jewkes filed a lawsuit April 24 in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas against Longview Medical Center L.P., doing business as Longview Regional Medical Center, citing premises liability. 


According to the complaint, Jewkes escorted her husband Kent, now deceased, to LMC’s Outpatient Radiology Department on Nov. 7, 2012. The suit states when they visited the smoking area, Shirley Jewkes was caused to trip and fall by uneven stones in the patio.


Jewkes says she broke her wrist and injured her shoulder.


The defendants are accused of negligence and failing to rectify a safety hazard.


Jewkes is seeking more than $75,000 in damages.


She is being represented in the case by attorneys N. Eric Cooper of The Cooper Law Firm and J. Kevin Carey of Carey Law Firm PLLC.
