A Beaumont woman is accused of failing to repay nearly $41,000 in student loans.

National Collegiate Student Loan Trust 2007-2 filed a lawsuit Aug. 19 in Jefferson County District Court against Belen Burks.

According to the complaint, Burks signed a student loan promissory note with Bank of America to attend Stephen F. Austin University. The original loan, part of the Student Loan Trusts, allowed for a deferral period, after which Burks allegedly agreed to begin making payments on the loan.

National Collegiate alleges Burks defaulted on the loan despite being sent a letter demanding full payment in February 2012. She is accused of breach of contract and, according to the lawsuit, has an outstanding balance of more than $40,000. The National Collegiate Student Loan Trust seeks the full balance plus interest, attorney and court fees.

Attorney Michael J. Scott, of Carrollton, represents the plaintiff.
