A fatal single-vehicle accident that occurred at a HEB store in Southeast Houston on Oct. 19 has resulted in a lawsuit, Harris County court records show.

Pasadena resident Daniel Sanchez has sued HEB Grocery Company, LP, Dorothy Davenport Barnes and Roberta Johnson Mayes over the death of his wife, Karla Sanchez. Maria Lorena Castorena, the decadent’s sister, is a co-plaintiff in the case.

The suit, filed Oct. 22 in the Harris County 127th District Court, explains that Karla Sanchez was shopping at the HEB Grocery Store – Gulfgate with her minor child and Castorena when the incident in question occurred.

According to the original petition, Barnes drove a 2005 Saturn Vue sports utility vehicle through a concrete sphere outside of the business and struck the three, who were reportedly standing near the cash registers.

“The plaintiff Karla Sanchez succumbed to her injuries in front of her minor child and Maria Lorena Castorena,” the complaint says.

Meanwhile, Castorena and the child “suffered severe personal injuries as a result of the impact with Barnes’s vehicle.”

HEB is blamed for the sphere’s alleged failure to prevent Barnes from crashing into the store while Mayes is faulted for negligently entrusting the use of the vehicle to Barnes.

The complainants consequently seek unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

They are represented by attorneys Anthony M. Denena and Chad D. Points of the law firm Denena & Points, P.C. in Houston.
