BEAUMONT — A Beaumont man is suing a former business associate, alleging he owes up to $100,000 for breach of contract.

James Francis Parent filed a lawsuit Sept. 8 in Jefferson County District Court against Kevin W. Smith,  alleging failure to perform his contractual obligations.

According to the complaint, on April 27, 2011, Parent entered into a written contract to lend $15,000 to Smith for the opening of a restaurant. The suit says Smith's breach caused Parent to suffer economic damages for not collecting payment for the $15,000 that was loaned.

The plaintiff alleges Smith has failed to make payment on the money he owes.

The plaintiff seeks trial by jury, monetary relief of up to $100,000, plus interest and penalties, court costs, expenses, pre-judgment interest, attorney fees and all other relief to which he is entitled. He is represented by attorney Bruce N. Smith of Smith & Shipley LLP in Beaumont.
