TYLER — A Smith County woman is suing Tyler, alleging violation of the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Brenda Johnson filed a complaint Feb. 8 in the Tyler Division of the Eastern District of Texas against the city of Tyler, alleging violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, Johnson, who was diagnosed with lupus in May 2013, was terminated from her employment March 21, 2016, leading to lost wages and benefits and lost employment opportunities, pecuniary losses, mental anguish and severe disappointment.

The plaintiff alleges that Tyler refused to make reasonable accommodation and terminated her because of her disability or perceived disability.

Johnson seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial, litigation expenses and all other proper relief. She is represented by attorney William S. Hommel, Jr. of Hommel Law Firm in Tyler.
