Tenant blames apartment owner for assault

HOUSTON — A Houston apartment tenant is suing the owner and manager of the apartment property, alleging their negligence led to her being assaulted on the property.

Chanel Melton filed a complaint April 12 in Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Trident Meyer Park Lakeside, LLC and Greystar Management Services LP, alleging failure to keep the apartment in a reasonably safe condition to protect tenants and guests on the premises.

According to the complaint, on April 22, 2016, Melton was attacked in her apartment, beaten, sexually assaulted and had her personal property stolen at 9550 Meyer Park Drive. Melton said she also learned that prior to her attack, crimes of similar nature within a 1 1/2-mile radius of the apartments occurred with 197 reports consisting of murder, rape, aggravated assault and robbery, As a result of the attack, she says she suffered physical injuries, trauma and incurred medical expenses. 

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to provide necessary and proper procedures and measures for the security and safety of the tenants and residents.

Melton seeks trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million, damages, all costs of court, pre- and post-judgment interest and all other just relief. She is represented by attorney Rhonda H. Wills of Wills Law Firm PLLC in Houston.
