A Houston resident has filed a lawsuit against a local business, alleging severe injuries due to negligence. Jodie Washington lodged the complaint in Harris County District Court on July 26, 2024, targeting The Sunrise House LLC for an incident that occurred earlier this year.
According to the filing, Washington claims she was injured on March 29, 2024, while attempting to enter The Sunrise House restaurant located at 1830 W. Alabama St., Houston, Texas. As she walked up a ramp leading into the establishment, a loose tile gave way under her weight, causing her to twist her ankle and fall. The plaintiff asserts that this incident resulted in significant personal injuries. "Defendant’s failure to warn of or eliminate the loose ramp tile proximately caused Plaintiff's injuries," the complaint states.
Washington alleges that The Sunrise House LLC had actual or constructive knowledge of the hazardous condition but failed to address it. She argues that the company neglected its duty by not warning patrons about the risk or eliminating it altogether. This negligence forms the basis of her premises liability claim against the defendant.
The damages Washington seeks are extensive. She is asking for compensation for past and future medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, physical disfigurement and impairment, and loss of earnings and earning capacity. Specifically, she is seeking monetary relief exceeding $250,000 but not more than $1 million.
Washington has also requested a jury trial to resolve her claims. In addition to compensatory damages, she seeks prejudgment interest and post-judgment interest at the highest rate allowed by law as well as court costs and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court.
Representing Jodie Washington are attorneys Alan Kolodny and Rashon Murrill from Kolodny Law Firm PLLC based in Houston. The case has been assigned Case ID 2024-47393 and will be heard in Harris County's 165th Judicial District Court.
