File photo from the Dec. 15 rally at the Orange County Courthouse after a grand jury chose not to indict an off-duty Orange police officer who shot and killed a man last July. The family of a man shot by an off-duty police officer has filed a lawsuit against the city of Orange, arguing it continued to employ the officer despite his alleged history of excessive force, violent outbursts and domestic abuse.

Boxes full of asbestos case files are stacked up at the Orange County Courthouse. It's possible that if a person were to lay the asbestos lawsuits filed in Southeast Texas in the early 1990s in a straight line, he or she could build a sidewalk between the Jefferson and Orange courthouses twice over.

The front doors of the San Jacinto building, where the Record office is located, suffered some damage and several offices lost windows. The staff of the Southeast Texas Record is happy to report that as of noon, Tuesday, Sept. 16, it has electric power and Internet capabilities as the area begins recovery from Hurricane Ike.
