Galveston Co. couple files benzene suit

A Galveston County husband and wife are suing several petrochemical companies over claims the husband contracted chronic lymphocytic leukemia from dangerous chemicals he came in contact with on the job.

Jimmie Brooks and Mary Brooks filed a lawsuit on Dec. 10, 2014, in the Galveston Division of the Southern District of Texas against: BP Amoco Chemical Company, formerly known as Amoco Chemical Company; BP Corporation North America Inc., individually and as successor in interest to or formerly known as Amoco Corporation and BP Amoco Corporation; BP Products North America Inc., formerly known as Amoco Oil Company, Amoco Texas Refining Company, and American Oil Company; Exxon Mobil Corporation; and United States Steel Corporation.

According to the complaint, Jimmie Brooks said he should have been informed by the defendants he was being exposed to the harmful chemical benzene and products that contained benzene while working in maintenance and as an operator for the defendants from 1966 through 1999.

The plaintiffs seek compensation and punitive damages for medical bills, pain and suffering, disfigurement, loss of consortium, attorney fees and other expenses. They are represented by attorney James D. Nebout of Burwell Burwell & Nebout in Texas City, and the law firm of Hobson & Bradley in Beaumont.
