Show to spotlight local musical legacy

Janis Joplin

Port Arthur will remember not only one of its most well-known residents but also its musical roots at the 21st Annual Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame Show.

Southeast Texas and the entire Gulf coast have a rich musical tradition and each year new names are added to the Music Hall of Fame and celebrated in concert. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Carl Parker Center at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 1500 Procter St., Port Arthur.

Music Hall of Fame Inductees "The Clique", Edgar Winter and the "Beat Daddys" will appear at this concert honoring Gulf Coast music legends. The Clique, best known for its 1969 hit "Sugar on Sunday" will headline the event.

The concert began as the Janis Joplin Birthday Bash, to celebrate the musical legacy of the Port Arthur girl who became a rock legend.

Each year a performer pays tribute to Joplin, and this year will feature Andra Mitrovich, who played the title role in the stage musical, "Love Janis," and is a member of Austin soul outfit "King Soul."

The unveiling of a historical marker outside Joplin's childhood home will begin at 11 a.m. at 4330 32nd St. in Port Arthur.

Advance concert tickets are $20; tickets at the door are $22.
