Tons of documents shredded to prevent ID theft

Almost 14 tons of documents were disposed of at the Sept. 8 "Shred It & Forget It" event sponsored by the BBB.

By Debbie Bridgeman, Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas

On Sept. 8, around 14 tons of documents were safely destroyed at the third annual "Shred It & Forget It" event sponsored by the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Texas.

Held at the Parkdale Mall parking lot, the BBB reports almost 240 vehicles dropped off personal papers, bank statements and insurance records for shredding in an effort to prevent identity theft.

Because of the success of the past three events, the Better Business Bureau will make "Shred It & Forget It!" available to consumers in Southeast Texas twice a year (April and October), starting April 2008 in Port Arthur. The BBB continues to stress the importance to shred your confidential documents; when improperly disposed of, it can lead to identity theft.

The BBB thanks Shred-It, MCT Credit Union, Southeast Texas Title Company, DynaSource, Inc., Bill Clark Pest Control, the West Brook High School Key Club, Beaumont Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Clear Channel Radio, and Parkdale Mall for their help in making the event possible.
