Seaman struck by pallet files Jones Act suit

GALVESTON - A Mississippi man has filed suit against his employer as a result of injuries he sustained while working on one of its vessels.

In a lawsuit filed Dec. 1 against Ensco Offshore Co. in the Galveston Division of the Southern District of Texas, Travis Dion Chambliss of Hattiesburg, Miss., claims he hurt himself aboard the Ensco 82 on May 27.

Chambliss explains that a pallet that was being lifted fell on him, injuring his neck and head.

"The defendants were negligent and the vessel was unseaworthy," the original petition says.

The plaintiff insists he additionally experienced mental anguish and lost wages thus seeks more than $75,000 in damages.

Schechter, McElwee, Shaffer & Harris LLP is representing Chambliss and U.S. District Court Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt is presiding over the case.
