Dear Editor,
From a layman and poor citizen, I would like to voice my objection to the so called "loser pays" bills (HB 274 and SB13) as well as the frivolous lawsuit law.
The courts are the poor man's only way to seek justice, in America we should not deny him the right. It is very difficult for him to hire an attorney and this type of law makes it more so.
The attorneys tend to shy away from taking a case that may be a close call and the poor man is intimidated by possible fines for seeking justice.
One of the most recent miscarriages of justice is the dismissal of a law suit filed by a Silsbee girl that had been raped and dismissed from the cheerleading squad for refusing to cheer for the alleged rapist.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for this young lady and her family for pursuing the matter.
Sincerely,
Wayne A. Gray
