Children claim mom received little care at Waco nursing home

Marion Rosen

GALVESTON - The children of a McLellan County resident allege their mother received little or no care at a Waco nursing home and have filed a lawsuit.

Yvonne Evette Heslip, Latasha Renee Jackson, Yarnell Denise Adams and Kadisha Rayzeen Jackson filed suit against Regent Care Center of Woodway and Regent Management Services on April 20 in Galveston County District Court.

They allege their mother, Harriette Jackson, suffered "mental and physical injuries, mental and emotional trauma, extreme humiliation and loss of dignity and respect" while a patient of Regent Care.

According to the suit, Jackson was admitted to the facility on Nov. 12, 2009, for a short stay related to rehabilitation following an above-the-knee amputation of her left leg.

The suit shows Harriette Jackson, then 59, was fully mentally capable and could talk and take care of herself with minimal assistance as she recovered from her surgery.

Though the defendants knew about the patient's medical condition and openly represented that they are able to meet her needs, they subjected her to various forms of neglect, the suit says.

The suit lists a number of alleged acts of wrongdoing, notably a series of falls which resulted in neurological injuries requiring emergency brain surgery in late 2009.

Harriette Jackson's children say the ordeal has left her "totally dependent on other for her care with no hope of recovering to her former mental and physical condition."

Consequently, the plaintiffs seek unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

They are represented by Marian S. Rosen & Associates.

Galveston County 122nd District Court Judge John Ellisor is presiding over the case.
