Plano man's suit claims debt collector humiliated him at work

Debt collector abuse

SHERMAN - A Plano man has filed a lawsuit against a debt collection company and its employees claiming the company broke federal law by calling his place of employment and humiliating him at work.

Alphonso Ray Jones filed suit against Nationwide Debt Management Solutions, John Doe Corp., Tracy Wade, Eric Medrano and Steve Cipolla on Aug. 28 in the Eastern District of Texas, Sherman Division.

According to the suit, Jones claims Nationwide began making collection calls to his place of employment around Oct. 17, 2011.

The defendants are accused of not disclosing they were debt collectors within the telephone calls and voicemails.

Jones accuses the defendants of violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Texas Debt Collection Act and the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act.

The plaintiff is seeking an award of monetary damages for personal humiliation, embarrassment, mental anguish, emotional distress, statutory damages, court costs, attorney’s fees and an injunction preventing the defendants from continuing its behavior.

Jones is represented by Dallas attorney Billy D. Price. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Schell is assigned to the case.
