Female police officer sues city of Corrigan for gender discrimination

LUFKIN - Female police officer Dana M. Vanya filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit against city of Corrigan on April 29 in the Eastern District of Texas, Lufkin Division.

Vanya was hired as a police officer for the city of Corrigan in August 2005. She claims that she was subjected to sexual harassment by her immediate supervisor in the form of statements laden with innuendo.

According to the lawsuit, Vanya claims that she was highly qualified for the position of sergeant but the defendant failed to consider or select her for promotion to the position.

She also alleges she was denied days off while officers of the opposite sex were allowed days off without giving a two-week advanced notice.  The Corrigan City Council was informed of the treatment, but no action was taken to remedy her situation, the suit states.

The defendant is accused of discrimination on the basis of sex, for subjecting Vanya to a sexually hostile working environment and for denying Vanya opportunities for advancement

The plaintiff is seeking an award of damages for lost wages and pension, compensatory damages for mental anguish and humiliation, punitive damages, court costs and attorney’s fees.

Vanya is represented by Lufkin attorney Charles R. Dendy. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Ron Clark is assigned to the case.
