SHERMAN - A Montana resident has filed a lawsuit claiming an East Texas debt collection agency violated federal law by refusing to stop its collection calls.

Tamara Jordon filed suit against Southwest Credit Systems L.P. on Aug. 2 in the Eastern District of Texas, Sherman Division.

Within the last year, Southwest Credit Systems placed numerous telephone calls to Jordon in an attempt to collect a debt. In response to the telephone calls, Jordan sent the defendant a certified letter requesting that it cease all calls. However, the telephone calls continued, according to the suit.

Jordan claims that the defendant’s actions have caused her to suffer from humiliation, anger, anxiety, emotional distress, fear, frustration and embarrassment.

The defendant is accused of violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Texas Debt Collection Act.

The plaintiff is seeking an award of actual, statutory, and punitive damages, court costs and attorney’s fees.

Jordon is represented by Jody B. Burton of Lemberg & Associates in Stamford, Conn. A jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Schell is assigned to the case.
