Jefferson County Bar to host free consumer law seminar for area veterans

Jcba

The Jefferson County Bar Association will hold a free consumer law seminar  for area veterans. The event will be held noon to 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 9, at the Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic, 3420 Veterans Circle, Beaumont.

The seminar is free for any Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Liberty or Chambers county veteran or spouse of a deceased veteran free of charge. Appointments are strongly recommended.

Beginning with a half-hour presentation about Consumer Laws, volunteer attorneys will then be available to provide basic legal advice to the veterans as needed.

For vets who need legal representation, a pro bono attorney may be assigned to them if the veteran financially qualifies. According to a press release, the guidelines to qualify financially have been adjusted for veterans, so that they may have income up to 200 percent above the poverty level and still qualify for the pro bono services.

The JCBA’s legal advice clinic is part of the statewide Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans initiative, a program begun by the State Bar of Texas and funded by The Texas Access to Justice Foundation to ensure that organized legal clinics exist throughout the state to specifically assist military veterans who cannot afford or do not have access to basic legal services.

To schedule an appointment, contact the Jefferson County Bar Association at (409)835-8647 or veteran@jcba.org.
