A woman is suing her former employer claiming she was fired for taking time off to attend to a sick relative.
Wendy Ann Henriques filed suit May 23 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas Houston Division against Strategy Engineering & Consulting LLC, citing violation of her Family and Medical Leave Act rights.
According to the complaint, Henriques began working for the defendant company in October 2011 as a senior project administrator. In January 2013 the plaintiff took time off from work after her mother suffered a series of strokes, the suit states.
The defendant allegedly fired Henriques in April 2013, citing excessive absenteeism. Henriques states her firing is in violation of her rights under the Family Medical Leave Act.
The plaintiff is seeking compensatory, punitive and liquidated damages.
