Conn's sues Jefferson County, alleging unlawful property appraisals

Qualitycontrol

Jefferson County property owners are suing the county's appraisal district, alleging unlawful appraisal of certain properties.

Conn's Appliances Inc. and Conn's Inc., as owners and lessee, filed a lawsuit Sept. 17 in Jefferson County District Court against the Jefferson County Appraisal District, alleging excessive, unlawful and unequal appraisal of properties.

The plaintiffs own or lease properties that the complaint alleges were appraised with market values in excess of those required by law. The complaint alleges the appraised value of the properties is not equal and uniform compared to the median appraisal level of similarly situated properties.

As a result, the excessive property values have injured the plaintiffs by assessing an excessive lien and tax burden on the properties, the suit says.

The plaintiffs seek an order setting the appraised value of the properties required by law, plus attorney fees and court costs. They are represented by attorney Kathleen J. Santos and Gavin McBryde of McBryde Firm in Austin.

Jefferson County District Court case number A-197567.
