BEAUMONT — Two Jefferson County parents and a next friend are suing a Port Arthur man, alleging his gunshot killed their daughter.

Bertha and Owen Fletcher, Jr., parents of Shalala Sharelle Fletcher, deceased, Tyran Chavis and Bertha Fletcher as next friend of Tyrus Williams Jr. and Shalyne Gatlin, minors, filed a lawsuit Aug. 9 in Jefferson County District Court against Michael Turner, alleging he failed to exercise due care in handling a firearm.

According to the complaint, on July 2, Shalala Sharelle Fletcher was shot and killed after Turner negligently discharged his firearm. As a result, Fletcher's next of kin will suffer future damages, including loss of companionship and society and mental anguish.

The plaintiffs seek trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million, pre- and post-judgment interest, court costs and all other relief. They are represented by attorney John Werner of Reaud, Morgan & Quinn LLP in Beaumont.
