HOUSTON — A black Houston woman is suing a real estate business, alleging racial discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination.

Akeha Green filed a lawsuit Aug. 23 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Orion Real Estate Services, Inc. alleging violation of the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act.

According to the complaint, Green, who began working for Orion Real Estate in 2011 as a property manager, experienced discrimination based on her race, gender, disability or a perceived disability. The suit says she was wrongfully terminated from her employment Dec. 5, 2012, in retaliation for complaining about discrimination and after she underwent major surgery.

The lawsuit states the dismissal caused Green to suffer lost wages and benefits, mental anguish and emotional distress. The plaintiff alleges Orion Real Estate subjected her to a hostile work environment, discrimination and retaliation, refused to grant her entire request for medical leave, demoted her, and refused to restore her to the position or compensation she held before her request for leave.

The suit says Green was fired while she was on FMLA-approved leave and in retaliation for taking FMLA to undergo major surgery.

Green seeks trial by jury, compensation for all damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, attorney fees and court costs, plus all other relief. She is represented by attorneys Alfonso Kennard, Jr. and Keenya R. Harrold of Kennard Richard PC in Houston.
