Slip01

BEAUMONT — A Jefferson County woman is suing a Port Arthur convenience store owner, alleging the defendant's negligence led to the plaintiff falling and suffering injuries.

Shelia Edwards filed a lawsuit Sept. 23 in Jefferson County District Court against MLHCK LLC, doing business as M & D Food Mart, alleging failure to properly maintain its equipment at the premises.

According to the complaint, on Oct. 15, 2014, Edwards entered the defendant's store in Port Arthur to purchase goods and services. The suit says she slipped and fell in a puddle of water from a leaking ice cream freezer.

The lawsuit states Edwards sustained severe injuries to her shoulder, neck and back that required invasive surgeries, resulting in physical and mental pain, disability and necessary medical care and treatment. The plaintiff alleges M & D Food Mart failed to warn Edwards of the leaking water from the freezer and failed to maintain a safe premises.

Edwards seeks trial by jury, monetary relief between $200,000 and $1 million, attorney fees, costs of court, pre- and post-judgment interest and all other relief. She is represented by attorneys Mark C. Sparks and Michael A. Downey of Mostyn Law in Beaumont.
