Four workers allege fishing boat owners failed to pay medical costs

Law money 12

HOUSTON — Four workers are suing fishing boat owners, alleging the defendants have failed to pay medical insurance benefits to the plaintiffs.

Joseph Barcot, Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Zamora and Javier Altamirano filed a lawsuit Nov. 28 in Harris County District Court against Trident Circle Inc., Yiannis Karampelas and Soterios John Platis, alleging they breached their duty to pay the plaintiffs' medical expenses.

According to the complaint, on Dec. 1, 2014, Barcot, Rodriguez, Zamora and Altamirano sustained serious and life-threatening injuries while working aboard defendants' fishing boat, the M/V Miss Eva, after the vessel exploded and caught fire.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants took the money they obtained from the insurance company and used it for their own benefits.

The plaintiffs seek trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million, an order directing the defendants to return the monies transferred to them, punitive damages, costs of court, attorney fees and all other just relief. They are represented by attorneys John W. Stevenson Jr. of Stevenson & Murray in Houston and Simon-O'Rourke and Nicholas Simon of Simon-O'Rourke PC in Houston.
