HOUSTON — A widow and her children are suing Houston apartment operators, alleging negligence in failing to prevent the death of the plaintiff's husband.

Naomi Allen, individually and as next friend of Julayja Allen, Julius Allen III and Julahla Allen, filed a complaint on Jan. 13, in the Harris County District Court against Southlawn Palms Apartments LLC and Arnold Grounds, alleging that they failed to maintain a safe environment.

According to the complaint, on Oct. 19, 2016, the plaintiffs husband and father, Julius Allen, was returning to his home at Southlawn Palms Apartments in Houston when he was shot by an unknown assailant. He died on the same day, the suit says.

The lawsuit states the Allens suffered loss of support, pain and suffering and mental anguish. The plaintiffs allege the defendants failed to properly repair their security system, failed to maintain proper security and failed to create and implement safety policies and procedures at the apartment complex.

The Allens seek trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million and all other just and equitable relief. They are represented by attorneys M. Paul Skrabanek and Michael E. Pierce of Pierce Skrabanek Bruera PLLC in Houston.
