Maritime worker blames vessel operators for injuries

Tugboat 01

BEAUMONT — A Jefferson County man is suing a marine towing company, alleging negligence led to injuries to the plaintiff.

Steven Kemp filed a complaint May 10 in Jefferson County District Court against Moran Towing Corporation Inc. and Moran Towing of Texas Inc., alleging failure to provide a seaworthy vessel.

According to the complaint, on on May 6, 2016, Kemp was severely injured while working aboard the defendant's Lizzy B. Moran with injuries to his hand, arm and shoulder. Despite the injuries, the suit says, the captain ordered Kemp to keep working, exacerbating his discomfort.

The injuries, the suit says, resulted in physical pain and disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of earnings and medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants negligently operated the vessel in an unsafe manner, failed to provide adequate safety equipment and crew for the job and failed to provide adequate medical treatment.

Kemp seeks trial by jury and seeks compensatory and consequential damages of more than $1 million, plus interest, costs of court, attorney fees and all other just and proper relief. He is represented by attorneys Nicholas A. Morrow and John D. Sheppard of Morrow & Sheppard LLP in Houston.
