BEAUMONT — A Jefferson County resident is suing Southwood Crossing Apartments and The ITEX Group Management LLC, claiming insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries.

Candace Steward filed a complaint in the Jefferson County District Court against the defendants alleging they breached their duty to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 1, 2016, she was at the defendants' premises in Port Arthur and was walking up the stairs when the railing broke. The plaintiff claims she sustained injuries resulting in pain and disability, loss of earnings, medical expenses and disfigurement.

The plaintiff holds Southwood Crossing Apartments and the ITEX Group Management responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to inspect the stairwells for defects and failed to eliminate the dangerous condition.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of over $200,000 but not more than $1 million, costs of court, legal interest and other special and equitable relief. She is represented by Jeffrey M. Stern of The Stern Law Group in Bellaire.
