Patient blames doctors for persistent pain

Medical malpractice 08

HOUSTON — A Brazoria County patient is suing two Harris County doctors, alleging their negligence caused her injuries.

Evelyn Bird filed a complaint July 13 in Harris County District Court against Dr. Laurens Pickard and Dr. James Gregory Bonnen, doing business as Texas Brain and Spine Center PA, alleging they provided services below the standards of ordinary care and practice.

According to the complaint, on July 13, 2015, Bird underwent an L5-S1 fusion performed by the defendants. Since the surgery, she says she has experienced constant perianal pain, which forced her to seek additional medical treatment.

The suit says a neurologist determined that her nerve plexus had been damaged during the spinal fusion and will require medical care for the rest of her life. The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to properly operate on her spine and complete the lumbar fusion without causing nerve damage.

Bird seeks trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million, actual and compensatory damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, costs of suit and all other just and equitable relief. She is represented by attorneys Mark O. Midani, Bridgit Ann White and Abigail J. Kim of The Midani Law Firm in Houston.
