HOUSTON – The family members of a woman who passed away after falling from a slot machine's chair are seeking more than $1 million from a Louisiana casino.

Maria Steffan Frank, individually and as administrator of the estate of Betty Steffan, David Bruce Steffan, et al. filed a complaint on Nov. 14, 2017, in the Harris County District Court against Pinnacle Entertainment Inc., doing business as L'Auberge Du Lac Hotel & Casino, alleging wrongful death, negligence and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on Nov. 30, 2015, Betty Steffan was injured while attempting to sit on a swivel chair in front of a slot machine at the defendant's premises. The suit states she was spun out of the chair, fell onto the steel floor and struck her head. She was diagnosed later that day with a subdural hematoma and died Dec. 1, 2015.

The plaintiffs hold Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. responsible because the defendants allegedly provided unstable seating and failed to ensure the premises was in a safe condition.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek monetary relief of more than $1 million and such other general and special relief to which they may show themselves justly entitled. They are represented by Christopher C. Garcia, Lauren E. Childress, Chip B. Lewis and Alicia O'Neill of Chris Garcia Law Group PC in Houston.
