Patient seeks more than $1 million from CHI St. Luke's Health over allergic reaction to iodine

Medical malpractice 05

HOUSTON – A patient is seeking more than $1 million in damages from a Harris County health care facility after suffering an allergic reaction to an iodine-based agent used in a procedure when the facility knew of the allergy.

Emerald Sampa filed a complaint on April 17 in the Harris County District Court against CHI St. Luke's Health Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center, et al. alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on May 27, 2016, she underwent a CT scan with contrast using an iodine-based agent at CHI St. Luke's Medical Center. She alleges the defendants were aware she had an iodine allergy before the procedure. As a result, she alleges she suffered a severe reaction that required extensive medical care, resulting in pain and suffering, mental anguish, discomfort, disfigurement and lost wages.

The plaintiff holds Chi St. Luke's Health Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center, et al. responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to heed her allergy and past reactions, failed to use a non-iodine based contrast and failed to adhere to acceptable standards of care.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks monetary relief of no less than $1 million and such other relief to which she may show herself justly entitled. She is represented by Michael S. Tilton and John A. Caston of Tilton & Tilton LLP in Houston.
