Slip02

BEAUMONT – A student at a Beaumont university alleges she needed two surgeries after slipping on water from a leaking water fountain in the lobby of a residence hall.

Deborah Hanington filed a complaint on May 10 in the Jefferson County District Court against Lamar University alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Dec. 12, 2017, she was a resident at Gentry Hall located on defendant's campus when she slipped and fell on a puddle of water in the lobby. The suit states the water was from a leaking fountain.

She alleges she sustained serious injuries the required her to be transported by ambulance to a hospital where she underwent emergency knee surgery and subsequently, an elbow surgery.

The plaintiff holds Lamar University responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to make the dangerous condition safe and failed to provide warning of the existing danger.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million and all other special and general relief that is lawful and equitable. She is represented by Paul F. Ferguson Jr. of The Ferguson Law Firm LLC in Beaumont.
