The Lanier Law Firm issued the following announcement on Aug. 17.

Eight attorneys from The Lanier Law Firm have been named among the best in the nation in the 2019 edition of the prestigious legal publication The Best Lawyers in America. The firm’s attorneys are recognized across five distinct practice areas.

Firm founder Mark Lanier is named in four categories: Commercial Litigation, Mass Tort Litigation, Personal Injury Litigation and Product Liability Litigation. Last month, Mr. Lanier secured a $4.69 billion verdict on behalf of 22 women who developed ovarian cancer as a result of longtime use of asbestos-laced talcum powder made by Johnson & Johnson.

That verdict, one of the largest in plaintiffs’ personal injury history, follows his success in three product liability verdicts during the past two years against J&J and its Pinnacle division. Those federal jury verdicts, totaling almost $2 billion, were based on the claims of multiple plaintiffs who suffered serious medical complications caused by the company’s defective hip implant devices. These results cumulatively put Mr. Lanier close to $20 billion in verdicts during his highly acclaimed career, which includes being listed in Best Lawyers for 12 consecutive years.

Dara G. Hegar, the firm’s managing attorney, was honored for the third year for her work on behalf of victims of serious personal injuries and dangerous products. In addition to her work on the hip implant cases, she was a key contributor in the firm’s recent litigation against Johnson & Johnson, helped the firm prevail in the nation’s first trial involving the controversial painkiller Vioxx, and was instrumental in securing a significant courtroom victory involving the diabetes drug Actos.

Evan M. Janush, managing attorney of the firm’s New York office, was selected for his work in mass torts and class actions. Currently focused on uncovering the wrongdoings behind the country’s tragic opioid crisis for a range of governmental clients, he has significant experience representing clients in complex commercial litigation and is the leader of the firm’s Employment Litigation practice.

The firm’s in-house trial psychologist Dr. Robert Leone also claimed his third consecutive appearance in Best Lawyers for his work in cases involving dangerous products. An accomplished lawyer who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Leone has played a role in litigating some of the highest-profile cases in history.

Richard D. Meadow claimed his sixth consecutive listing based on his work for plaintiffs in class actions and mass torts, as well as personal injury claims. The firm’s National Mass Torts Leader, Mr. Meadow, who works from the Houston office, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top lawyers in mass tort cases and class actions.

Kevin P. Parker, head of the firm’s Issues and Appeals Section, was recognized by Best Lawyers in the area of appellate practice. The Houston-based attorney has handled more than 20 cases at the appeals level and has been a key contributor in numerous civil trials for the firm and its clients.

Judson A. Waltman, managing attorney in Houston over Personal Injury, Product Liability and Maritime Litigation, was selected in the personal injury litigation area based on his successful representation of plaintiffs who are victims of unsafe products, medical malpractice and corporate negligence.

Lawrence P. Wilson was recognized for his product liability litigation. The Houston-based Mr. Wilson has secured significant compensation for clients in numerous jury trials involving unsafe products as well as medical malpractice, sexual assault, age discrimination, premises liability and other negligence claims.
