Locke Lord issued the following announcement on Sept. 6.
Locke Lord Partner David Patton, Co-Chair of the Firm’s EnergyPractice Group, has been selected by Texas Lawyer as a Lifetime Achievement honoree. Patton, one of only 13 individuals recognized this year for having made their mark on the legal profession in the Lone Star State, was profiled in the September issue of Texas Lawyer and will be honored at an awards ceremony in Dallas on September 18.
“David is an esteemed colleague, a highly respected lawyer and a good friend, and he is extremely deserving of this recognition,” said David Taylor, Chair of Locke Lord. “He embodies the service aspect of this profession, and we are proud to see David honored for his devotion to the law and the lasting mark he has left at Locke Lord and across the legal community.”
Based in Locke Lord’s Houston office, Patton has nearly 40 years of experience in the energy industry, having joined Locke Lord predecessor firm Liddell Sapp Zivley and Brown in 1977 as the 26th lawyer. He has extensive experience in many areas of the oil and gas industry, including acquisitions and sales of assets or equity interests and drafting and negotiating leases, contracts and agreements related to field operations. He has represented clients in connection with surface use conflicts, day-to-day exploration and development activities and the resolution of oil and gas disputes.
In his profile, Patton speaks about changes within the profession and offers up advice to young lawyers. He said, “Choose to lead rather than follow in the background. Leadership naturally flows from having good relationships and earning respect through unselfish service. And there is a critical benefit of leadership; it allows you to shape what happens around you for the better.”
A longtime member of the Advisory Board of the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law, Patton was honored in February with the prestigious Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award by the organization. He was only the 13th recipient of the award, an accolade presented to individuals for significant contributions to the oil, gas and energy industry. He is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and has served in numerous leadership roles within the State Bar of Texas Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law Section, including as Chair. Patton is a frequent speaker on oil and gas issues and is a Trustee and former executive committee member of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. Patton has been recognized by Chambers USA and The Best Lawyers in America for Oil & Gas Law and has been named by the Houston Business Journal to the Who’s Who in Energy list. He serves on the DXP Enterprises Inc. Board of Directors. Active in community service, he has served as President of the Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association and Chair of Baseball USA.
