HOUSTON — A nursing technician who injured her back while assisting a patient alleges Kindred Hospital Houston failed to give her proper training or support.

Kristine Castillo filed a complaint Nov. 19 in Harris County Court against Kindred Healthcare Operating Inc., and THC Houston LLC alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, Castillo was working as a nursing technician at the defendant's Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest facility on Fallbrook Drive in Houston. She claims that as she was assisting a patient who was "obese," she radioed for help multiple times but was denied any help.

Castillo further claims that she suffered serious injury to her back while moving the patient by herself. She alleges the defendant's negligence for failing to provide her proper equipment and assistance and for failing to implement safety protocols for heavy lifting or properly train staff.

Castillo also alleges the defendants failed to take any "remedial action" for known hazards and disregarded her safety. She claims as a result of her injury, she has suffered impairment and incurred medical expenses.

Castillo seeks more than $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Scott Armstrong and Teri Russell of Armstrong & Lee LLP in Houston.
