The University of Houston Law Center hosted its annual Student Academic Achievement Reception this spring to congratulate excelling students in the Top 30% of their 1L, first semester class.

“The first semester of the first year are so important; so this is a great way for us to pat you on the back and say congratulations. We are so proud of you, and we expect remarkable things from you going forward. Do not think that it is over; keep working hard,” UHLC Dean Leonard M. Baynes said.

Teni Fayiga, a UH student completing a dual degree with a Juris Doctorate and Master of Public Policy, is in the top 5% of his law school class. Fayiga shared some words of advice with fellow students at the reception.

“What I wanted to talk about in the significance of being in the Top 30%, in particular, is what it won’t get you and what you still need to work on in order to succeed in law school,” said Fayiga. “Your grades will give you opportunities to network with people, but they won’t do the networking for you. I want to encourage you to put the time into networking and communicating both with your peers and with industry experts, people who are already working to help guide your career path.”
