About Allensworth and William R. Allensworth’s Legacy

Founded in 1995, Allensworth has grown into a nationally recognized leader in construction law, representing clients through every stage of the construction process—from contract negotiations to complex litigation. Known for handling high-stakes disputes and shaping the legal landscape of the industry, the firm’s commitment to excellence continues to influence the next generation of construction lawyers.

William R. Allensworth graduated with High Honors from Texas Tech Law before beginning his legal career at Haynes and Boone, later founding Allensworth & Porter, now known as Allensworth. A trailblazer in construction law, he was instrumental in establishing the State Bar of Texas’s Construction Law Section and dedicated nearly 30 semesters to teaching construction law at the University of Texas School of Law. His contributions earned him induction into the American College of Construction Lawyers and the State Bar of Texas’s Pioneer Award for his impact on the profession.

Throughout his career, Allensworth maintained an active trial and appellate practice, arguing at every level of Texas and federal courts—including a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court (Atlantic Marine Construction Co., Inc. v. U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, 571 U.S. 49 (2013)). Following his retirement, he was appointed Chairman of the Texas Facilities Commission, overseeing the $750 million Capitol Mall project in Austin.

Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

"It is an incredible honor to celebrate William R. Allensworth’s legacy through this scholarship,” said Joe R. Basham, co-managing partner at Allensworth and a 2002 Texas Tech Law alumnus. “William’s unwavering dedication to the legal profession, his pioneering work in construction law, and his deep commitment to mentorship have shaped generations of lawyers. We are proud to support Texas Tech Law students in his name, ensuring that his spirit of excellence and service continues to inspire future leaders in construction law.”
