Hayden Spurgeon | University of Texas at Austin

Hometown: Sidney, OhioDegrees: B.S. in Social Work, Ohio University

How did your family encourage you to become a first-generation college student?

I owe it all to my mom, who is my biggest supporter. Every dream goal or ambition—no matter how big, small, or impossible—my mom told me I can achieve anything I set my mind to. Most importantly, she taught me how to work hard and persevere when the odds stack against me.

What made you choose Texas Law?

I chose Texas Law while attending Admitted Students Day because I loved the vibe of Texas Law and Austin. All the signs pointed me to Texas Law, and I am very grateful to be here!

What’s the most interesting class you’ve taken at the Law School?

I loved the course Music Festival Law with (Adjunct) Professor (Heather) Van Dyke. My favorite part was meeting the Austin City Limit’s legal team on site between weeks one and two!

It sounds like you’re quite a fan of music festivals … what do you enjoy the most about these events?

I love all live music. I especially love musical festivals because of the shared understanding of PLUR—Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. I love taking that experience back home with me and striving to practice those values every day as I move through life.

What is your favorite thing about the culture of Texas Law?

Everyone has a place at Texas Law; you just have to find it!

What is a misconception you had about law school?

I thought law school was going to be a very cutthroat and toxic environment. However, I found Texas Law to be the opposite of that and my success is not dependent on another student’s downfall.

What is your favorite book that you’d recommend to your friends — and why?

I would recommend the book The Alchemist. This book is a fable representing the idea that it’s about the lessons, experiences, and company you find along a journey, not the treasure at the end.
