JC Bar continues call-in legal help with 2015 dates

The public can now get free answers to basic legal problems by calling a special phone number once a month and speaking to a volunteer attorney.

The Jefferson County Bar Association is continuing its public service program, Legal Line, with nine dates in 2015.

On the third Thursday of every month except May, November and December, the public can call 409-719-5999 between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The next Legal Line date will be Jan. 22.

Callers will speak to an attorney on the phone, who will answer legal questions, give brief legal advice and give additional resources to help with the problem.

Problems can be issues of family law, consumer law, criminal law, wills and probates, landlord/tenant disputes, business matters, tax issues, neighborhood issues, real estate, personal injury, insurance, immigration and traffic violations.

Because volunteers are trying to help as many people as possible, they try to provide basic information and advice as wells as give suggestions for other resources. They are not able to give detailed legal advice over the phone. But many times, the attorney is able to provide all the information the caller needs. Other times, they can direct the caller to another source or assist them in determining their next step.
