A Jefferson County school district's insurance companies are suing over claims a drunk driver crashed into school property.

Axis Surplus Insurance Company and Westchester Surplus Lines Insurance Company, as subrogees of Port Arthur Independent School District, filed a lawsuit Nov. 7, 2014, in Jefferson County District Court against Sahkunda Richmond, citing negligence.

According to the complaint, on July 1, 2013, Richmond hosted a social gathering at which a guest became drunk, obtained the keys to Richmond's vehicle, and crashed it into the Port Arthur Independent School District's property on DeQueen Boulevard, causing extensive damage to the building and equipment such as computers, phones and other electrical equipment, which was insured by the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs seek more than $91,000 in damages. They are represented by attorney Hobart M. Hind of Butler Pappas Weihmuller Katz Craig in Tampa, Fla.
