DRC to hold mediation training in fall

The Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) of Jefferson County is accepting applications for a mediation training program scheduled in the fall.

Two training dates will be held, the first from Oct. 5-7, and another from Oct. 19-21. Class size is limited.

An orientation will be held Sept. 11 to give applicants a full understanding of the center's programs, including training and volunteer commitments required of mediators affiliated with the DRC. A one-page narrative is requested from applicants entitled, "Why I want to mediate."

This 40-hour curriculum meets requirements set forth in the Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures Act, Title VII Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code 154 for qualification of mediators in Texas. A commitment to be a DRC volunteer is required for an applicant to be considered for inclusion in the course.

Training topics include:

  • Mediation model
  • ADR Legislation
  • Communication skills
  • Negotiations strategies
  • Ethics.

Applicants are required to participate in an interview with members of the DRC training team and may register for the interview during orientation. Three letters of reference are requested at the interview.

After interviews are completed, invitations to the training course will be sent to applicants who have been selected for the course.

The training site will be announced at a later date.
