Deloris "Bobbie" Prince
After recounting the votes Wednesday from the mayor's race in Port Arthur, candidates Deloris "Bobbie" Prince and Willie "Bae" Lewis are still the contenders for the June 30 runoff election.
Prince and Lewis received the most votes in the May 12 election, but neither received a majority. Candidate Esther Benoit came in so close behind Lewis, only 80 votes, that she requested a recount.
The recount was conducted by Jefferson County election officials on May 23. While the recount showed slightly different results in the race, Prince and Lewis still surfaced as the top two vote-getters.
After Election Day, Prince had 2,032 votes, Lewis had 1,799 and Benoit had 1,719. After Wednesday's recount, each of the three had fewer votes, with Prince at 2,024, Lewis at 1,784 and Benoit at 1,712 votes.
