Local residents are claiming they purchased interests in alternative energy sources on advice from tax preparers that the securities would provide them with tax credits.
Instead of bringing tax relief, however, the residents ended up being audited by the Internal Revenue Service because the securities they purchased were allegedly illegal.
In a class action lawsuit filed against Compro Tax and several of its employees, lead class plaintiff Elizabeth Gillepsie alleges she and other Beaumont residents went to numerous Compro tax preparers and certified public accountants from 2004 through 2008.
The plaintiffs are seeking punitive damages.

A Silsbee man has filed suit against Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth, alleging he developed ulcers, an infection and pneumonia after his stay at the hospital.
Ronald Lee Lewis says he was a patient at Christus for continuing medical care from Feb. 14, 2007, until March 24, 2007.
During his treatment, however, Lewis claims he suffered from a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, ventilator-associated pneumonia and several decubitus ulcers due to the hospital's failure to have an adequate pressure ulcer prevention program.
According to the complaint, the hospital employees admitted a patient knowing the patient's needs could not be met, failed to evaluate and maintain Lewis's wounds, failed to keep appropriate medical records and failed to document a plan of care.
Lewis alleges the hospital was guilty of negligence and breached its duty to provide proper care and protection to Lewis.
As a result of the care he was given at the hospital, Lewis incurred medical expenses, experienced past and future physical pain, suffering, mental anguish, physical impairment and disfigurement, fear of a future disease and costs of medical monitoring and prevention, according to the complaint.

A Chambers County man and his wife say a Texas welding company owes them money for damages after the man injured himself while trying to remove bottles from a metal basket.
Jerry and Mary Weisse filed a lawsuit against New Wave Welding Technology.
The couple says Jerry Weisse was working as a pipefitter at Valero on Jan. 3, 2008, when the incident occurred.
New Wave had rented, sold or leased oxygen and acetylene bottles to Valero for use on the job site, the complaint says. The bottles came in a metal basket, sometimes referred to as a six pack.
As part of his job, Jerry Weisse was required to step onto the six pack. However, the basket lacked an adequate surface for a step and had no adequate handrails, the complaint says.
As a result, Jerry Weisse was seriously injured in his right upper extremity and required surgery, although the complaint does not specify how his injury occurred.
He also incurred medical costs, lost his earning capacity and experienced physical pain, suffering, mental anguish, physical impairment, physical disfigurement, a loss of consortium and a loss of household services, according to the complaint.

A prominent Beaumont attorney who says he was terminated from a case in which he was supposed to earn 40 percent of the attorneys' fees has filed a lawsuit against an Austin man, another attorney and a law firm.
On May 6 Clay Dugas filed a lawsuit in Jefferson County District Court against Richard Woods, Elizabeth Higginbotham and Higginbotham and Associates.
In the suit, Dugas contends Woods hired him to represent Woods in a breach of contract for commission claim filed in Travis County against Hill Country Harley Davidson and Terry Gregorika.
According to the complaint, Dugas was supposed to receive 40 percent interest in the claims owned by Woods, and Woods was supposed to pay all expenses Dugas incurred in prosecution of the case.
